Going to school by bike
Choosing a bike for your child is an important decision!
Cycling is begun at an early age, so it is important that the child has a safe and high-quality bicycle. A child’s own bicycle offers independence and freedom, strengthens self-esteem and increases their physical activity and recreational opportunities. The type of bicycle you get for your child’s trip to school is therefore a significant choice, with several factors to take into account to ensure the child’s comfort and safety.
Keep at least these points in mind
Size of the bicycle
From the point of view of safety, it is imperative that the bicycle is the right size for the schoolchild. You should not buy a bike with room for growth for a child: a bike that is too big or too small can be difficult to handle and can thus even be dangerous. The expert staff at bike shops will be happy to help you choose the right size bike for your child.
Accessories
The most necessary safety equipment is a bicycle helmet. The helmet protects the most important thing, the child’s head, in case of falling, for example. Get your child a helmet that fits well and is comfortable to wear.
Make sure that the bike has enough reflectors, a bell and front and rear lights for dark. A reflective vest is a good addition in the dark and helps other road users notice even the smallest cyclist. In addition, mudguards keep clothes drier and cleaner in wet and muddy conditions.
Make sure that the child knows how to lock the bike during the school day and keeps it in the place designated for bicycles at the school. Therefore, when choosing a lock, it is worth focusing on it being easy to use. In addition to a frame lock, it is possible to get a cable lock for additional security, for example.
Teach traffic rules
Before the child starts using the bike independently on school trips, it is a good idea to practise the route together. Together with the child, think about a safe route to school – avoid busy roads and preferably choose cycling routes and cycle paths.

Clothing appropriate for the weather
The child should have suitable clothing for cycling in different weather conditions. Rain gear and other warm clothes are important for comfortable cycling and keep clothes dry during the school day.
Bicycle maintenance
Regularly check the condition of the child’s bicycle and have it serviced at least once a year. Make sure that the brakes, tyres and chains are in order. Regular maintenance keeps the bike safe and thus in good condition also for the next user.
Coaster brake or hand brake?
The choice of brakes is a question that often puzzles when choosing a bike for a child. The type of brake that is good for a child’s bike depends on the child’s age, skill level and intended use. Always consider your child’s skill level in using the brakes – some children may find it easier to brake with a hand brake, while others may feel safer when using a coaster brake.
A coaster brake can often be easier to use, and it is better suited for younger children who are still only learning how to ride a bike. Braking with a coaster brake only requires pressing your feet against the brake pedals, which may be more natural for young cyclists.
A hand brake requires a little more coordination skill, so it is often a better option for a young cyclist that already has cycling experience.
Many bike models have both hand brakes and a coaster brake. This makes it possible to practise using both brake types.
